6-Magnitude Earthquake in Afghanistan

    A 6-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, killing more than 800 people and injuring thousands. Authorities are concerned about further casualties as the relief teams move to the remote communities, where electricity is cut off. The neighbouring country, China, has pledged relief support. About 15 miles away from the epicentre, more than 200,000 people reside. Residents even 100 miles away reported a strong aftershock, raising further safety concerns. Afghanistan experienced a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 2023, which led to the deaths of more than 2,000 people.

Ongoing Saga in Gaza

    Flotillas, known as fleets of ships carrying supplies and activists from 44 countries, were forced to turn back one day after departure due to the rough sea and strong winds. The 20 ships were expected to grow to 70 by the time they reached the water off of Gaza. Hamas has been stepping up its offensive on Gaza recently, blocking supplies in the northern enclave, since it declared Gaza to be a combat zone. In 2023, the war began after Hamas took 251 citizens hostage and killed 200 of them. Since then, 63,000 people have died, including 252 from malnutrition. An activist, Greta Thunberg, attempted to supply Gaza last year, but ended up being deported by Hamas military forces. Still, the activists continue sending ships towards Gaza to supply water, food, and medication.

While the union representing the horse carriage drivers claims other vehicles, such as electric scooters or bikes, pose a bigger threat, the recent incidents have brought the concerns to the fore, the CEO said. Ryder, a carriage horse has collapsed then was euthanized, and another horse collapsed then died after serving in NY for only 2 months. The Mayor, who has the major power to pass the ban bill, stated that this tradition has been taking place day in, day out, sparking debate over the ban. The CEO of Conservancy added that she acknowledges the driver’s effort and empathizes with them, but safety issues trump tradition. Drivers, working under the authority’s scrutiny, argue that the Conservancy is taking sides with the animal activists, while the Mayor is taking measures to find a solution for both animal and citizen safety.
