50,000 Students to Struggle with Commuting

    Students who rely on public transportation in Philadelphia are struggling with commuting. The city’s transit authority, SEPTA, was forced to reduce the bus and rail routes due to a 20% budget shortfall. While lawmakers are pressured to enforce measures to address this issue, 50,000 student transit users will be facing a worsening situation, due to more route cuts and higher fares starting next week. 

Teachers’ Shortfalls in Iowa

    The CNN10 affiliate shed light on the teacher shortage in Iowa. 660 teacher jobs remain unfilled, mainly in special education, science, English language arts, and mathematics. Authorities say the situation has improved compared to 900 vacancies in the past two years. Iowa issued the largest pay raise, investing $100 million. This problem is not limited to one state; nationwide, one out of 8 positions remains unfilled as of July, shedding light on students switching their dream of becoming a teacher or even their state they will work in as a teacher.

No Success without Attempts

AI to Restore Oil Paintings.

    A graduate from MIA developed an AI-driven oil painting restoration process. The AI scans the paintings in high resolution and compares them with the images to detect damage. In the manual process, only a fraction of the damage that visible to human eyes are inpainted. The AI process instead applies a membrane sheet, thinner than a strand of hair, which is easily reversible. The engineer believes this faster and easier technology will help restore many paintings that remain damaged due to a lack of resources. 

Infant Twins Rescued from Hurricane to Become Marines

    Twenty years ago, Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, leaving many people struggling to stay alive in muggy shelters with an inadequate food supply. That’s when a Lieutenant General, Russell Honore, a decorated commander for military operations, came to the rescue. Six-and-a-half-month-old twins and their mother, rescued during Katrina, faced another disaster when Hurricane Harvey hammered their new home in Houston in 2017. Russell responded to their mother’s social media message, saving their improbable lives in part. Honouring their experiences, the two young boys, Jamari and Amari Reynold, have now graduated from high school and plan to join the Marine Corps.
