Sea Conservationists and Divers: Underwater Exploration for Conservation
Under the Pole, a team of research divers has been pioneering sea conservation efforts through underwater exploration. Co-founder and co-director Ghilslain Bardout says every diver has an eye towards the deep bottom and curiosity about exploring the deep sea. Since 2007, they've completed thousands of dives, reaching depths of 150 to 200 meters, requiring 3 hours for resurfacing. Their efforts in 2022 resulted in the protection of a black coral forest in the Canary Islands. Currently, they're embarking on an expedition across the Mediterranean—exploring from Greece to Italy and France—in search of another black coral forest.
Ghilslain admires the coordination required in their work, spanning humans, logistics, and organizational engagement.
Leftover Pumpkin Bombs
A teacher in a North Dakota middle school conducted leftover pumpkin bombs in the name of science. Using a compound called calcium carbide, the chemical reaction when water meets this compound was showcased. Interestingly, the very first Jack-o'-lanterns were made out of turnips in Ireland to ward off evil spirits. Well, the young Jack-o'-lantern bombs in the middle school demonstration seemed to have positive reactions.
