Pesky invasive alien species cause $425 billion in damage annually worldwide, leading to significant economic and environmental harm. Recent UN reports highlight that human activities such as travel and global trade are spreading these species at an unprecedented rate, rapidly spreading diseases. Every year, approximately 200 new species are identified, and among the estimated 37,000 alien species, 3,500 are causing economic and environmental damage, ruining crops, wiping out native species, and polluting water, ultimately contributing to plant extinction and food scarcity.
Scientists report that the associated economic damage has been skyrocketing, with costs quadrupling every 10 years since the 1970s.
Experts are seeking new ideas or cooperation to prevent further damage in the future.
