At the Oakland Zoo, a 6-week-old baby giraffe, Kendi, is learning how to drink water from a moat. Giraffes typically spread their front legs into a “V” shape to reach the water. Kendi nearly succeeded but, much like someone gaining sea legs after a boat ride, she found it a bit challenging. Nonetheless, her attempts at drinking water haven't hindered her energetic playfulness, as she runs and prances around with enthusiasm. She has come a long way from when she was in her mom’s belly, kicking and stretching. She managed to stand on her feet on the same day when she was born. Her legs might seem spindly, but they are bendy and flexible. With time, it's hoped that Kendi will jump the last hurdles to drink water on her own.
