An Authoritarian Country Plans Invasion

Venezuela carried out a referendum in reference to the takeover of Guyana, a nation rich in oil and under dispute between the two countries for over a century. Despite a border set by an international tribunal in 1866, Venezuela has laid claim to the country. The Venezuelan President claimed that the land was stolen by colonial powers. The preliminary result released on Sunday showed a positive outcome, passing by 95%. This move has raised concerns in Guyana about the imminent existential threat of invasion and annexation, with the Guyanese Vice President even invoking Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
