Extra Security for COVID-19 at the U.S. International Airports.
In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduced a Traveler-Based Genomic Surveillance Program aimed at detecting COVID-19. It’s currently implemented at international airports in Boston, San Francisco, Washington, and New York City. The CDC is expanding the program’s project to include over 30 pathogens. Volunteering for nasal swabs is open to International travelers, with approximately 370,000 people from 135 countries having participated. Health officials expect this program to detect new infectious variants of COVID-19.
The Secret of the Sphinx.
The Sphinx, near Giza's famous Pyramid, has the head of a human and the body of a lion. People have been curious about how it ended up in the desert. Farouk El-Baz, a geologist put forward a theory 40 years ago: the wind shaped the Sphinx to be a reclining lion. Fast forward to today, NYU’s Applied Mathematic Lab replicated the windy conditions, instead of wind, they applied a flat stream of water. This experiment ended up with, lo and behold, water washing over the object into a lion shape, supporting the opinion that wind shaped it and the details were the work of ancient Egyptians.
