On Thursday, China launched a spacecraft with three astronauts on board from the Jiuquan Space Center in the Gobi desert. It’s headed to Tiangong Space Station for a 6-month mission to repair the debris and damaged solar panels. Since the U.S. banned NASA from working with China in space in 2011, this is carried out without cooperation from the U.S.
China has been putting its space missions in high gear for 20 years. Chinese Officials say they have never sought hegemony in space. However, once the International Space Station retires, they may assume prominence in the space industry.
After the U.S. ban, which triggered the 21st-century space race, China had a rover on Mars. Now, they are planning to send their astronauts to the Moon.
