On Wednesday, a category 5 storm struck Mexico, uprooting trees and smashing buildings. According to the local power utility, 500,000 people lost power, making it challenging for authorities and rescue operations to get a handle on the true extent of the damage. The storm hit in the dead of night. It instantaneously strengthened itself by 115 miles per hour in only 24 hours, after encountering an 88-degree warm swath of seawater. This rapid intensification took meteorologists off guard. Very few weather models that meteorologists looked to picked up on this phenomenon. It marked the first category 5 storm to make landfall in the East Pacific and the strongest one on the Pacific coastline in Mexico.
