The Kasai River in Angola is Africa's largest river by volume, supplying fresh water to millions. However, it has never been documented by scientists.
As part of the Perpetual Planet Initiative, explorer Steve Boyes has been on its expedition and documentation. He gave up his master's dissertation and devoted his entire life to advocating for Okavango Delta’s UNESCO World Heritage site. Within three months, he shifted his focus and traced the river to its sources. There, he discovered an ancient, crystal-clear acidic lake surrounded by peatland - a seasonally flooded wetland that hadn’t been known. It’s a natural water tower structure, consisting of high altitude, a forested watershed, and high rainfall, capable of storing thousands of years' worth of water. With this system, this area could weather climatic oscillation and enrich wildernesses.
Dr. Steve Boyes sees it as the keystone of our future and has embarked on building the baseline river. He’s been chasing after the discovery, importance, and nature of this source of lake, exploring endemism, the source of an emerging large water tower.
