Urban heat islands occur when heat radiates off concrete, asphalt, and reflective building designs. Meteorologists documented this phenomenon in the 1800s. But many people in cities continue to accept so little of cities and endure this.
Two architects have been mapping a city to sort out the solution for urban heat islands, using a drone. This is how it works. First, a drone takes thousands of pictures, collecting identical thermal data throughout vast swathes of a city. These high-resolution standard photos form the urban material palette, allowing identification of heat distribution on materials. They capture every streetscape like intersections, buildings, tree grates, shades, and even shrubs. The architects found the temperature of the exposed parking lot and bitumen rooftops can increase by upwards of 20 degrees Fahrenheit compared to shades.
Heat-related death is increasing. The architects hope other companies and cities will use the toolkit to find appropriate treatment options.
