The United Auto Workers (UAW) is gearing up to fight for pay rise, benefits, and job protection. It came as the Big Three automakers, Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, reached record profits. The workers were forced to give up those rights when the Big Three were cash-starved and on the brink of bankruptcy. Ford and GM threatened the union, announcing the possible layoffs of non-striking workers resulting from the lack of parts due to striking plants. GM announced that up to 2,000 workers could be laid off this week if the strike continues. The union will be sticking out, since they believe they have the upper hand due to factors such as inflation, a tight labor market, increasing public support, and covid-19.
Analysts expect this strike could cost the economy $5.6 billion in 10 days and it will add up. Reportedly, they had a reasonably productive conversation though, both sides still fall apart and a tenth of UAW members, which consists of 143,000 workers, are on strike. The damage to the economy hinges on how long this historic strike will last.
