The storm Daniel brought a Mediterranean Hurricane, "Medicane," which dumped 16 inches of rain and it lasted over 24 hours in some places. It strained two aging dams to the point of bursting, resulting in destruction, sweeping away, and burial of buildings in mud. 891 buildings have been destroyed, 211 damaged, and 391 submerged. People were displaced from their houses, which were washed into the sea. They are exposed to landmines and explosive ordnance from decades of conflict. The death toll is all over the place, with outlets reporting 4,000 to 20,000 dead. Despite the rescue effort over a week, thousands of people are missing. It indicates this country is incapable of dealing with this catastrophe, with the absence of coordination with rival governments playing a role. The African Union Chairperson is calling on other African member states to take pity on the survivors and missings and to support them.
