Cascade Valley Metro Park was once known as Valley View Golf Club, serving as a 4-par golf course for 50 years. In 2015 it was shut down, and the restoration process began. The park was manicured by invasive grasses channeling itself to the golf course. The riverbank was steep since it was built out to keep the water out of the golf course. When the restoration organizations initiated the course of action, they looked out over undoing the golf course. They chipped away at the project by planting a range of native vegetation rather than trees. Additionally, they reintroduced the water back onto the land. Today, there are various plants, including mallow generation, which make up the “Marsh Mallow” area in the floodplain. This project has connected the 1800 acres of other Summit Metro Parks, extending the habitat for a wide array of endangered wildlife. The hope is that this legacy will inspire people, particularly the younger generation, to become the next generation of land stewards.
