Scientists warn that severe weather is getting more common as the seas’ temperature warms up, burdening the Hurricane Hunters. Hurricane Hunters work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), documenting the severe weather for forecasting. Their workplace is a plane reconfigured from a Gulfstream 4, which is generally used for business. They fly from the fair-weather cumulus to the severe weather scenery to collect data from data sparse areas. When they get to the area, they launch a dropsonde every 10 minutes and the deployed sensor collects the data. The Doppler radar is also attached to the plane.
They maneuver the reconnaissance plane around, below, above, and in front of the scenery. Above a hurricane, they can clearly see the hurricane churning whitecaps into the sea. Oftentimes, the plane gets turbulent with the hurricane lurking by it.
The Hunters are risking their lives for people back home. They spend more time up at high altitudes than at home. After decompressing and getting ready mentally, they fly back up to the sky for others' safety all the while people are evacuating there.
