Firefighters in California are utilizing Artificial Intelligence to detect fires before they escalate into infernos. This is how it works. An AI deployed at a dispatch center connects thousands of cameras in California's wilderness. When a camera captures a fire, AI determines whether it’s a fire. It's also improving itself to reach greater precision in spotting wildfires by interacting with humans. When a human confirms what the AI detects, it stores the data to identify another case. A member of Cal Fire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, shared a story about the day when he got a fire alert from AI, which the dispatch center didn’t notice. What the AI spotted was a faint column of smoke.
He mentioned that AI cannot replace boots on the ground though, it can give them a leg up.
The AI pilot program went well, prompting Cal Fire to expand it to 21 dispatch centers.
*Vocabularies; inferno, leg up, dispatch, precision, faint, boots on the ground
