Hawaii is one of the most preserved islands in the world. A Hawaiian island, Maui, is obliterated by a deadly wildfire. 100 people have died, and it cost $6 billion in damage. Officials are expecting the damage will increase. Homes and businesses have been gutted out. Pioneer Hotel, the very first hotel in this town, is unrecognizably devastated.
Recent drought covered ⅓ of its land, making it more susceptible to fire. Category 4 hurricane Dora caused winds that rapidly spread the wildfire. In five minutes, a smolder of fire became a brushfire and went into a wildfire. When the fire started, the emergency siren didn’t go off. Warning posts were sent via social media instead, but it only reached smaller people. Roadblocks forced people into one narrow street and caused a bottleneck. People weren’t able to be evacuated and displaced on time.
Even though Hawaii is familiar with weather extremes, they’ve never seen anything like this. Officials are still investigating why the emergency siren didn’t sound.
