The more polarized your content became, the more often it was shown to others. Facebook execs thought they needed all hands on deck, so they increased the security team to 30,000 by 2018.
Publicly, Facebook was limited in transparency. But in early 2018, data from up to 87 million users was collected before the election through an online survey. The methodology was permissible at that time. Ethical debates put Facebook on thin ice. User trust eroded, stock price tanked, and there was only silence from upper rank.
