The Aftermath of Debts-for-Conservation-Swaps in Galapagos Islands.

The Ecuadorian Archipelago, the Galapagos Islands that inspired the Theory of Evolution has biodiversity, including various marine and terrestrial species. But they are in danger lately. The flycatchers native to this island are dwindling in number. Only 15 adult pairs remain. Ecuador implemented a project, the Debt for Nature, to conserve wildlife. As a comeback of the effort, 12 new chicks have been hatched in the last few years, showing they would live on to fight another day. This glimmer of hope spurred people to make a great effort for endangered species. Ecuador announced to convert 1.6 billion dollars to 12 million dollars of a loan for funding conservation. In the next two decades, they will channel 400 million dollars for it. The Ecuadorian Environmental Minister stated this is not only for protecting marine and migratory species but also to keep the fishery sustainable. Galapagos Islands are at perilous crossroads and this is the result of the debt-for-conservation swaps in history. But they are anticipating this project will be the litmus test to conserve other endangered flora and fauna all over the world, and combat the decrease of wildlife and thus they could reach a win-win for the economy and environment.
