At the wetland in Western Uganda, avian life reigns supreme, with 1,070 different bird species, accounting for 10% of the birds worldwide. Among them, the terrestrial bird, the Crane, holds a prominent place on Uganda’s flag as the national emblem. However, Crane's population remains threatened, with only 300 individuals left. Since 2000, this wetland has lost 5,000 hectares a year, a quarter of its total area.
Achilles Byaruhanga, the Executive Director of NatureUganda, foresaw that if this degradation continued, all the wetlands would disappear by 2030, posing a significant threat to the cradle of wildlife and habitat loss. Consequently, he pioneered the largest-scale restoration program, affecting interventions in natural habitats and providing a buffer from human effects such as hunting, poisoning, and electrocution from power lines. By collaborating with local communities, he incentivized their engagement as custodians for crane conservation.
