Why is it Unprecedented? The Conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The conflict between Hamas and Israel dates back many decades, to Israel's founding in 1948. But why is it unprecedented? First, the surprise of the attack. Hamas launched a barrage of rockets to Israel, while their gunmen entered the territory. Israel, known for its impressive armed forces, premier intelligence agency, and sophisticated border security, has never seen this type of infiltration of military bases, towns, and kibbutzim in its 50-year history. Therefore, the attack from Hamas caught Israel off guard.
Second, the intensity of the attack. Since the assault on October 7th, Hamas has launched over 5000 rockets. To put that in context, during the bilateral 11-day war, 4300 rockets were launched. Following Saturday's attack, the Israeli Prime Minister stated he’d set the stage for war with Hamas, marking the first such declaration in 50 years.
Lastly, there's the hostage situation. Hamas is holding more than 100 hostages including high-ranking army officers, women, and the elderly in Gaza, making Israel’s attack on Gaza particularly challenging.
U.S. President Joe Biden called the Hamas' attack an action of sheer evil. Israel has responded to the attack by hammering buildings to rubble and causing 680 casualties in the Palestinian enclave.
