The new journey to the core of the Earth is in NASA's mind big time. On Friday, NASA’s Falcon Heavy rocket was lifted off in Florida. Its destination is a metal-rich asteroid, 16 Psyche, which orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists hypothesized its rocky surface was formed when it lost its surroundings in a collision with other bodies. So this will be the first time for humans to visit a metallic asteroid. Scientists expect this metallic asteroid to have a resemblance to the center of the Earth. So, this mission is a journey to the unstudied center of the Earth.
This colossal journey will happen over the next 6 years. It will orbit an interplanetary place for several years then slingshot off Mars into 16 Psyche. Next, it will spend over two years mapping, studying, and taking images of this object.
